The Make-Your-Own Manifesto Project is part of a semi-humorous consideration of the internet as a political and social environment. The "Start a Revolution" Project initially comes across as tongue in cheek; fill out a quiz much like the “which Simpson's character are you?” type, which will be available for display on journals or personal web pages. However, there is also the serious element which allows for people to communicate with others subject matter they feel strongly for. The final integration of this project will enable the public to "recruit" their friends, and to share things they have done in reality to further their cause, with a communal evaluation system that will not only encourage them by getting feedback from others, but will also appeal to a person’s competitive nature, making users want to continue to actively do things in the real world (if that is where their cause exists, of course). |
The theme for this project was "my relation to this place". I considered what Calgary meant to me at the time, and I came to the conclusion that this city scares me. Faced with graduation, I was afraid of being forced to sacrifice my identity as an artist in order to survive. I worried that I would become assimilated into the city and become just another white collar drone. These images consider that worry in both a serious and humorous fashion. |
Another tongue in cheek image. Initially this was just playing off of a running joke amongst my peers that I always have genitals in my images somewhere. However it turned out to be quite successful. |
This project is a combination of polishing my photography skills - I had just recently purchased a DSLR and was feeling lost - and also to challenge myself to learn to communicate the things which catch my attention as an artist on a purely aesthetic level. This challenged me to consider the world around me for its light, tonal and compositional value in a way I had up until now typically taken for granted. The project occurred over a span of four weeks; each weekend I would travel to the Alberta country and photograph things which struck me as being picture-worthy. These are selected images from the collection - a total of some 500+ images. |
